That’s why some of the most important ministry we can do for preteens happens when there aren’t any preteens in the room.
Parent gatherings create space to talk about what’s happening during the preteen years, help parents understand what their kids are experiencing, and give families practical ways to continue spiritual conversations at home.
But creating a helpful parent gathering takes time. You have to research the topic, figure out what to teach, create slides and handouts, think through discussion questions, promote the meeting, and somehow turn all of that into an evening parents will actually want to attend.

Preteen ministry is most effective when ministry leaders and parents aren’t working in separate lanes.
You bring experience with preteens, an understanding of this unique stage of development, and a perspective parents may not always get to see. Parents bring something equally important: a deep understanding of their own child.

The Big Idea
The preteen years are not a time to step back from parenting. They are a time to learn a new way to parent.
Something begins changing during the preteen years. Kids who once happily followed their parents’ lead begin wanting more independence, making more decisions for themselves, and developing opinions and interests that belong to them.
That change is healthy, but knowing how to parent through it can be difficult.
Letting Go Without Losing Connection uses the familiar picture of teaching a child to ride a bike to introduce parents to Let Go and Run Beside. Eventually, a parent has to let go of the bike. If they never let go, the child never learns to ride. But letting go doesn’t mean walking away.
During this 60 minute meeting, parents will explore what can happen when they don’t let go and continue managing things their preteen is becoming ready to own, as well as what can happen when they let go without running beside their preteen with the connection and guidance they still need.
Along the way, current research helps parents understand some of the developmental changes behind what they're experiencing at home. Scripture, including Deuteronomy 6 and 1 Samuel 3, helps parents consider how they can increasingly give their preteen opportunities to hear from, respond to, and walk with God.
Parents have opportunities to discuss what they're experiencing in their own homes and begin identifying practical places where they can let go while continuing to run beside.
